In Cape Girardeau, the region's largest city, you can take the
Great Murals Tour, visit the Glenn House, a
Victorian house museum, The River Heritage Museum, Old
St. Vincent's Church, The Arts Council Galleries, The Red
House Interpretive Center, commemorating Lewis and Clark's
visit to the area in 1803, and the Common Pleas Courthouse
(1854) sitting high above the Mississippi River in the
downtown area. Take the Rush Limbaugh Self-Driving Tour
and tour the University Museum on the campus
of Southeast Missouri State University. Visit Capaha Park
Rose Garden and Cape Rock Park commemorating the
trading post that predated the city.
Visit the Bollinger Mill State Historic Site in Burfordville, a 19th century
grist mill and covered bridge. The bridge spans the
Whitewater River and is the oldest of only four remaining
covered bridges in Missouri. In the county, the Trail of Tears State Park is a memorial to the Cherokees'
forced journey from Georgia to Oklahoma.
The City of Jackson's heritage includes the oldest protestant Church
west of the Mississippi, Old McKendree Chapel (1809).
Relive the past with a ride on the St. Louis Iron Mountain
and Southern Railway steam train and visit the Oliver
